Where should I locate the box outside my house?
Peter Crabtree, Hurst
The key safe will need installing flush to a solid surface in a location that is accessible to the user but not obvious to passers by.

Is this safe weatherproof? We have tried several other similar types, and in this cold weather, they seem to not work.
Also, photos indicate that there is a little "pot" in the opening that allows keys to sit in - is this correct?
Gen, Nottingham
This unit is designed for outdoor use so will offer some weather resistance, there is plastic cover that can be moved into place to conceal the number dials when not in use for added protection. There is a cavity at the base of the unit that keys can fit into.

Will it fit car keys inside?
Anonymous
This unit is designed mainly for the storage of house door keys, a car key may fit inside the unit but this would be dependent on the size of the key and key fob, as these can be significantly larger on some car keys.

Does it come with anchors to fix it to a wall? If so would you still recommend using different anchors.
Anthony Liffers, Hertford
The Yale Y500 Key Safe comes with a fixing kit which includes 4 x standard masonry screws and wall plugs. This fixing kit is adequate for a secure installation.

Can your keysafes be fitted when there is pebble dashing to the surface of the house?
Karenna Caun, Lancaster
Any gaps behind the key safe will aid in prising it from the wall. Ideally it should be mounted flush to a flat solid surface.

I have forgotten the code. Can I open it through the back after removing the black back. It looks like the pin might lift using a screw driver.
Anonymous
No, the pin that you lift to reset the code will not move when the door is closed. This is a security feature to prevent unauthorised access. I am afraid the only way in without damaging the key safe will be to try all the different codes.

We have a holiday cottage and want a key safe so that we can give the code to guests to access the property when we are not there. It seems that when the guest opens the safe they could -just for a laugh - potentially change the code so that we wouldn't be able to open the safe again. Is there a key safe available where the combination is controlled by using a master key of some sort?
Mike, London
With the Yale Y500, there is nothing in place to stop somebody from changing the PIN code that you have previously set. We do have the GE S7 Big Box KeySafe and the GE C500 Police Approved KeySafe where you can purchase the 'Anti-Tamper Code Cover' as an optional extra, which prevents unauthorised users from changing the PIN code.

Do the digits in the code have to be entered in a pre-set order or can they be random?

We have a very old fashioned key 13cm long, will it fit inside?
Tim, Bristol
Unfortunately this length of key wouldn't be suitable for any of our outdoor key safes. Why not look at the Sterling Combination 20 - Key Cabinet which you may find suitable.

With the Yale Y500 key safe, how easy is it to change the pin code? Is it something that could be done "accidentally" by someone opening the key safe?
Anonymous
Though the code change system on this unit is simplistic, changing the code is not something that can be done accidentally. On the inside of the door of the unit there is a catch that must be moved to another position to allow the code to be changed and then moved back to the original position for the code to be set.

How secure is this unit? I'm looking to get one for my elderly mother and I want to ensure it is as tamper proof as possible.
Martyn, Nottingham
All outdoor key safes are designed for convenience rather than high security. It will take considerable force for somebody to break in to it though. The most secure key safe that we stock is the GE C500 Police Approved KeySafe, which might be more suitable as it is the only key safe that is police approved.
