Buying a new safe? Read our guide.

A safe can become an integral part of your home or office security if you know what to look for. This user-friendly guide will tell you all you need to know before you buy.

Choosing a Fire Safe - What to Consider

Choosing the right fireproof safe depends on the documents and types of media you want to protect. With our easy buying guide, we'll help you protect the documents that matter most.

Documents

Documents

The safe's internal temperature must remain below 177°C to prevent the paper from combusting.

Digital Media

Digital Media

The safe's internal temperature will not rise above 120°C to prevent digital media from corrupting.

Magnetic Media

Magnetic Media

Tapes and film will spoil at only 52°C, so the internal safe temperature must remain below this level.

Some fireproof safes offer protection for all of these items, but most will only protect one type.
For example, a safe designed to protect documents will NOT offer protection for magnetic media. However, some fireproof safes do offer protection from water (handy in case of contact with fire hoses or sprinkler systems). Always read the descriptions.

Installation

Installation

So as not to compromise the fire protection, only Standard and selected Medium level fireproof safes can be bolted to the floor.

Internal Size

Internal Size

Fireproof safes are often smaller inside than they look. This is because fire-resistant materials built into the safe walls reduce the internal size. Just something to bear in mind.

iIt's not just what a fireproof safe can protect, but also for how long. This is known as a fire rating and it's measured in minutes. More minutes means longer fire resistance.
